Taekwon-Do is a traditional Korean Martial Art developed by General Choi Hong Hi (IX) (1918 – 2002). Translated literally Taekwon-Do means “the way of the feet and hands”.
Practitioners of Taekwon-Do are widely recognised as having superior kicking ability to that of most other arts. Indeed, it is from Taekwon-Do that many of the kicks used in Extreme Martial Arts and the movies are taken from. Taekwon-Do is also renowned for its traditional forms (or patterns) and the discipline that accompanies the learning of these unique movements. In addition, Taekwon-Do has become more and more of a spectator sport for many over the years due to the dynamic, fast and exciting nature of sparring.
Our Chief Instructor, Mr. T Nicholson V Degree International Instructor and Examiner had the honour of being trained directly by the founding father of Taekwon-Do, General Choi Hong Hi (IX).
At the age of twelve General Choi started to study Taekyon, an ancient Korean method of fighting with the feet. At the end of World War II General Choi became an officer in the Korean army and continued to study for his martial art, whilst also teaching it to his soldiers as well as to American Soldiers serving in Korea.
The name ‘Taekwon-Do’ was officially adopted for the art in 1955. Following this, in 1959 General Choi was named President of the Korean Taekwon-Do association, seven years later on March 22nd 1966 he created the International Taekwon-Do Federation, and as president and founder he was able to share his art with his students everywhere. Today, Taekwon-Do training is available around the world and is the most practised martial art of all.
Since its beginnings, Taekwon-Do has never stopped evolving, driven by the strong will and a lot of hard work by its founder. PROACTION Martial Arts continue this philosophy through its founder, the evolution of the martial arts and by encompassing aspects from all martial arts, mainly those from Kickboxing and modern Close Quarter Combat methods.
In summary, Taekwon-Do is a dynamic, fun and exciting art that can be practised by all, promoting Confidence, Health, Fitness, Discipline and Respect to all.
